The Crying Tree

What’s the saddest book you’ve read recently?

The Crying Tree by Naseem Rakha

The death warrant arrived that morning, packaged in a large white envelope marked confidential and addressed to Tab Mason, Superintendent, Oregon State Penitentiary.

Irene and Nate Stanley's son Shep, has been murdered in their Oregon home, apparently in a robbery. A nineteen year old man Daniel Robbin gives himself up for the said murder and after nineteen years he is given the death sentence, that is to die by lethal injection.

With as difficult as subject like this, it can only be a sad book. That didn't stop me from liking it. I consider it one of my best reads of 2009. Click on the title to read my review.

I've read a few reviews of this book--I think I need to read it.

Yes, it does seem like a sad and serious book. When I'm up for more crying I will definitely keep it in mind.

That does sound like a sad one but it also sounds good. I just won this book so now I'm definitely looking forward to it knowing it was one of your favorite reads this year.

I've been a sucker of tear-jerker, both books and movies. I've got Marley and Me and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Now I have to check this one out.

I took up Simon's recommendation of In Cold Blood and I might as well check out yours. :)

That does sound like an especially sad one! Glad you enjoyed it - it would probably be a little too intense for me.

You're right - sad can definitely equal good.

Sad can be good, too. I've read a bit too many sad books lately though, so I'm looking for something lighter next :)

Although it sounds sad, it sounds like an excellent read.

I'm such a cry baby that I'm usually hesitant to take on sad books. But interestingly, I've loved just about every sad book that I've come across.

I don't read sad books in general, and this one sounds like it would have me in tears. I know that I'm missing some of the best books and movies out there, but I just don't want to need tissues for things I'm reading or watching for enjoyment.

This sounds very interesting. I will have to check out half price books!
