Mad, mad, mad days! Don't know what to do! However, we are going to have 5 days autumn break. Much needed one! I will do nothing! Sleep, eat, rest! That's my plan...

I might go Puja Pandal hopping, or do some saree shopping. With my bestie, Mamta Jain! And of course, mom!

This grey Pasapalli belongs to my mom. She has draped it many a times. I have paired it with a red Sambalpuri Ikat blouse. Grey is the colour of Fifth day of Navratri..

All pics taken by my mom. And mind you, I am a very serious person.....!

How does one define busy days? When you don't know one ting from the other. It gets so hectic that you forget what you have been doing. That's what happened to me today. I was doing everything mechanically......

Sometimes, we have to do more than what ought to be. Then, we run out of time and race against it. I know I badly need a break. But that is not possible for a while now. I have to do census work along with my regular teaching. That means, I will be busy even after the work day gets over.

And then there are some who think teachers have everything easy. For them I say, try teaching a class of 70-100. Having four periods a day where each one is of 70 minutes duration. In the so called free periods, check the notebooks, distribute mid day meal, meet parents and distribute funds for uniform and books. Don't forget other funds like minority, and reserved category scholarships.

I have only enumerated the important aspects. One can't even imagine the pressure we are in....does anyone care?

Draped this green Kota silk cotton saree with a matching two by two rubia blouse. Perfect colour for the 4th day of Navratri. It is a repeat in the pact. Accessorized it with a string of beads, gifted by one of my colleagues, Sunita Bharti.

My designated official photographer of the day did not let me down! So the funny poses, at her behest!

Once upon a time, I used to fast during the Navratris. I mean, no cereals, no pulses and and big no no for certain vegetables. It led to eating all kinds of "allowed" stuff. And I ended up eating more than the usual. So one fine day, I snapped out of it. What use is fasting if I think of food whole day long?

I told Durga maa the same and stopped fasting. She has no issues with that and loves me the as only a mother can love her child. Now I do the regular puja each morning. And then go about my life. Like every year, this year too, I shall be visiting the Puja pandals, starting from Anand mela. I, so look forward to it!

This mustard tangail silk saree belonged to my youngest SIL. As she no longer drapes sarees, she gave it to me. I have paired with a turquoise two by two rubia blouse. Does anyone wear such blouses any more?

I think this saree nicely follows the colour code of third day of Navratri, this year...

Such a busy time in school but my official photographer did not let me down. She takes my pics even when I am half dead, about to drop flat on the ground!

When I joined the teaching profession, I was in a good place in my mind. Teaching, interacting, counselling are mandatory aspects. So is marking papers, which we absolutely loath to do!

I finished marking 125 papers of Class 12. Question paper is of 100 marks, so you can imagine how much time I had to devote to each answer sheet. Initially it takes around 50 min for each and subsequently the time lessens as we get used to the questions and of course the answers. We come down to 15 min per sheet.

When the evaluation part gets over, we are like...ah...freedom! Until then, we keep asking our colleagues......how many have you done? We envy the person whose work finishes first!

So now what? Census work looms large.......

I was looking for a Royal Blue saree. Couldn't find one in cotton. Decided to wear this printed Garden Vareli marble chiffon saree with a newly stitched blue handloom blouse.

I am tired but so what?

A post graduate in Chemistry, I started my teaching career with Math. Taught it to middle and secondary classes for many years. Now teaching English to class 12 for the last three years. Yes, I am a post graduate in English too.

Life has been interesting. From pure sciences to pure maths and then to literature. I am a poet too. Writen more than 2000 poems in English. Published in Ezines. I also read like crazy and write book reviews. I have two very popular blogs, one for poetry, other for book reviews.

When I hear people say, we don't have time, I don't believe that. The problem is, Time Management. I have succeeded doing that fairly well. I have set time slots for each of my interests and try to stick to that. And if I am unable to do that, I don't beat myself. I simply carry it over.

Life throws many surprises and we have to accept that and welcome those.

This Sambalpuri is very old, belongs to my mom. Has tiny cheques. I have always loved it. Paired with a printed blouse. It is some random fabric bought from local market. I liked it and got a blouse made out of it.

No accessories. Right now, no time nor interest....

When I woke up in the morning, my first thought was to visit the Sri Jagannath Temple in Hauz Khas. Before I could even voice it to my mom, she got a call from my brother asking her if we would like to visit the temple with them. My mom agreed without even asking me. What do you call it, ESP? From all involved?

We reached well in time for the Darshan and the subsequent Bhog. It being the last day of Pitrishraadh, the temple was crowded. Yet there was no chaos and it was pleasure to go there with my brother and his family.

And it was another opportunity to drape a saree. I repeated this Kargil saree but tying it differently. I made a knot of the aanchal on my left shoulder and my hands were free. I repeated the same Ikat blousethat I had worn with this saree. Come to think of it, my mom too repeated the same saree that she had draped when I had draped the Kargil saree. My SIL was dressed in a Sambalpuri Salwar suit. Ethnic, are we?

Saturday Snapshot: A tale of Six Yards

This Chanderi silk belongs to my mom. It was gifted to her by my youngest SIL's family when her brother got married. I have always eyed it. She draped it only once and gave it to me as she did not like it for its sheerness. Here I have matched it with a magenta handloom blouse with gold border, bought long time ago from Nalli.

I am draping a Kasavu paired with an Odisha Ikat blouse. This saree was gifted to my mom by my eldest SIL.

When I was doing my PG in Chemistry, I never once considered I would be teaching in a school. I had some vague idea of doing research. It was the last day of our PG exams. Delhi University had announced admissions for B. Ed in Central Institute of Education. One of my friends wanted to get the form. CIE is in the walking distance from Faculty of Chemistry.

So, a few of us accompanied her and all of us ended up buying a form each. I filled it up, deposited it with Rs 50/- as application fee. two weeks later, there was a written exam and an interview. Needless to say, I got through. From our Chemistry dept, around 120 had applied, six cleared the written exam, and three got selected. Till that time, I had no intention of doing B.Ed. However, CIE is one of the premier institutes for Education and that decided for me to pursue it.

I have never looked back and here I am teaching!! It is not always hunky-dory but teaching does gives us instant feedback, including the highs and the lows. I studied Chemistry, was posted as a Math teacher, now teaching English. How did that happen? That story is for another day...

My saree......marble chiffon, with subtle stone and sequin work, not at all jaded. Bought from one of the CTC plaza sales, long time back. Easy to drape and hugs the body lovingly!

Saturday Snapshot: Uplifting Sarees!

What to do? Sarees and only sarees!

Sep 30, 2015

Once upon a time, we used to look forward to the last day of the month. We called it last working day. It used to be a holiday for the students. We did all the pending work and enjoyed as well. But that was a long long time back. It started with extra classes for X and XII. And one fine day, the mid day meal was started and hence no holiday for any of the students. Now it is a half day for all except class XII. As I teach the same, no break for me.

Summative Assessments I are going on. It was a no exam day. And no teaching day as well. After a long long time. But.....yes, there is always a but......it was very busy than usual. We have 4400+ girls in our school. Being the Examination In Charge is a big responsibility. I do have a great team who put their best. Pre-planning is very important. That, when the exam is going to be in 50+ rooms. Need I say more?

My SIL gifted this saree to mom when she was there with them in early 2013. It is earthy pink with greenish blackish pallu and border. It has a checked Ikat pallu. I tried pairing with all kinds of blouses but found plain black goes best with it. My earrings are brass ones from Odisha.

BTW, we did have a Tikki chaat party. After that stomach infection, I loved eating junk food!

Just when one thinks all is going well, life has other designs! Of all things, I got a severe stomach infection. I slept half of Saturday and all of Sunday, in between you know what! My mom is there to take care of me but of course she worries....

Being the one in charge of Examination in school, I couldn't take leave on Monday but the worst was over by then. My colleagues were very helpful in dolling out advise!

I am always wrapped in Maa's love. More so when I drape of her sarees. Today, I picked this off white saree from her Hakoba collection. Like her , I too am a big fan of Hakoba stuff. Paired this with a magenta handloom blouse from Nalli. Put on my Fabindia silver danglers.

Got a lot of compliments. Also it seems I have inspired a few others to drape sarees. Yay, yay!

Saturday Snapshot: Saree and long skirt

Summer holidays and I am looking for opportunities to drape a saree.

23 June 2015

21/100

How does one write about meeting school friends after 32+ years? All of us passed out from Lady Irwin School, Delhi. And that single fact has helped in bonding us. It hardly matters who was in Science and who was in Humanities. I don't even remember. My memory is about the good times we had in school, the reading of M&Bs in the classes, the sport activities and our teachers.

It felt good to know that all of us are doing well in our chosen fields. And it felt even better to know that the next generation is doing well too....

My saree is a Kalamkari cotton recently bought from Nalli. Very soft and easy to drape. I paired with a khadi blouse and earrings bought from a flea market. One of my friend's too turned up in a saree, a light printed chiffon.

Of course we took pictures, the grp photos and my individual saree photo.div>

26 June 2015

Last day of Summer vacations. I and mom went to my brother's place. I wore a long skirt with printed top. Sharing that here.

Saturday Snapshot: June 13, 2015...Saree 17 to 20

I will continue with my saree date posts..:D

17/100

Our dept. conducts seminars during summer vacations for teachers every year. It is done subject-wise. At one time, it used to be for two weeks, which was reduced to one week, then 5 days and now for 4 days only.

I am not going to comment on the learning aspect but it sure feels good to meet other teachers from the same subjects from other schools.

Sometimes the infrastructure, where is seminar is being conducted is good. At times, it is not up to the mark. Yet somehow we end up waiting for the next year's Seminar.

Such official gatherings means one can drape sarees. More so after signing the 100 saree pact.

Here my saree is a Bengal Cotton, what is basically known as taant. Light shade of mustard and very easy to wear. It has bootis all over. I wore it with a contrast blouse.

I think, my youngest SIL bought it from Kolkata when she had gone there for an official tour. She had brought sarees for all of us. This one she had given to mom.

Accessories are only my ear-drops randomly bought from a local market.

18/100

Seminar day 2. On day 1, there was not much accomplished. Except for catching up with old friends. I and another colleague of mine had a great chatting session. We simply needed to share our thoughts and all that had happened in the past one year.

The hall is big but fans are far between. As Delhi is reeling under heat wave, those fans don't help. Sitting at one place for 6 hours with 30 min break is a bit too much. What do we do? We walk out of that hall and walk the corridors to beat the heat.

Today, in the last session, we were given a topic and do free writing on that. I composed a poem in less than five minutes and read it out. Felt good to do so for an audience, that too in a saree!

I am draping a Kasavu cotton saree with orange, mauve and gold border. I had bought it from Kochi airport way back in Mar 2012. My brother, his family, mom and I had gone on a vacation to South. We visited Meenakshi temple, Rameswaram and finally travelled to Munnar. I virtually did no shopping exceot for various spices and tea from the tea gardens. When we were returning, it hit me hard in the airport that I had not bought a single saree for myself and mom. So I ended up buying this saree and a dupatta for myself along with another saree for mom.

The blouse is khadi, dark brown with typical khadi embroidery in yellow. I am very partial to Khadi blouses. My Jhumkis are bought from a local market.

I have draped this saree once before in August 2012 on the eve of Independence day, with a green blouse to give it a tricolour affect. I have a picture of that. See the last photo.

I almost always wear different blouses with the same saree as many times as I drape it. That gives the saree a new look...

19/100

Seminar day 3. Reached early. Surprisingly the session too started on time. The resource person was one of the best. She involved all of us. One of the exercises was collage making in 15 minutes. Ours was one of the best presented as it was larger than the other one. (I had won first prize last year, in inter-district collage making!!)

About this saree, I had bought it for my mom some 12 years back. She draped it only once and gave it back to me as she wears light coloured sarees. It is a soft cotton saree with a beautiful border with a matching blouse piece. It has small hand embroidered flowers all over the body. I seldom wear the matching blouse with that particular saree. However, this blouse goes with few others sarees too.

My ear-drops are made from cane and I bought those from Dilli Haat, INA fairly recently. Very lightweight.

I must mention here that I am enjoying draping my sarees. It has given me confidence and I feel a sense of well being...

20/100

Hot humid Delhi. And you are invited to a housewarming party. What do you do? You go there in a cool cotton saree!!

I am doing the admissions for Class XI, so I went to that housewarming party directly from school.

This saree belonged to my mom and now it belongs to me. How? We had gone to a resort in Toshali, near Puri, way back in 2004. One of those days, we visited my eldest Mami. My eldest mama is no more and my mom is very fond of her SIL. This saree was a gift to my mom from her SIL, my mami. Such a beautiful Odisha Sambalpuri Handloom cotton. (I too was gifted a saree but that story is for another day). Both the sarees were gifted with falls and sides stitched along with blouses and petticoats. (Readymade choli cut cotton blouses are easily available in Odisha and West Bengal).

I draped that saree on that resort for some kind of function with a black sleeveless blouse.

After that, I have draped it many, many times with different blouses. Mom is too happy to see me wearing it and gave it to me.

Today I draped it with one of my favourite Khadi blouses and the lightweight cane earrings.

I love the body, the border and the pallu of this saree.

Saturday Snapshot: May 23, 2015 More Saree dates.....

I am being narcissistic, by posting my saree pictures. This time I am deviating. I am also posting pics of my Mom and eldest SIL.

I am also adding stories too, for each of the photos.

Moi and Mom
May 14, 2015

It was a lazy start of a week. Schools closed for summer.

I had not taken my mom out or bought anything for her on Mother's day. It had rained the day before and the weather was good. Mom and I decided to go to various emporia.

I seldom drape a saree when I go for shopping but I decided to do so . I raided my mom's wardrobe and selected this Odisha Bapta saree. The best thing about it, is the patlipallu. One of a kind saree in my mom's collection. Bapta is a mix of tussar and cotton. Such sarees are no longer weaved in Odisha. My mom has two such sarees, one has temple border and this one is patilipallu. I have draped both at various occasions. Both sarees are at least 30 years old. I suppose I will inherit both the sarees as none of my three SILs drape sarees. I might consider sharing with my eldest SIL, Sujata Tripathy!!

My mom too draped a cotton saree from Odisha, a fairly recent one gifted by one of her sisters. Sharing her picture too.....

As usual I had no accessories other than the pearl ones. But then pearls are eternal....

My mom wanted a saree from Odisha emporium only. We went there first. I ended up buying three cotton sarees, one for her, two for myself. I also bought an Ikat blouse piece from there. We also visited Lepakshi, Andhra emporium. I bought three more blouse pieces from there. I met Ritu Venkatesh there. She recognised me via my mom becos of the the pictures I post on FB. It was good to see her after 32 years.... Ritu, you are  welcome to share my mom's sarees.....

Somehow I did not like any of the stuff from other state emporium. We came back after having lunch at Coffee Home.

It was well worth it, wearing that saree. Many asked about it. Next time, I drape it, I will do so with a tank top! I need to experiment.....

My brother and SIL

May 17, 2015

It was Savitri Vrat on May 17. On this day, wives keep fast for their husband's long life. My SIL bought this saree for the same occasion and draped it for the Puja. It is a Venkatgiri cotton. I love that particular shade.

My brother lives in Bangalore. My SIL always sends pics to us for all kinds of festivals and celebrations. Mom and I also do the same. This way we keep the family closer...

Moi in half and half saree

May 20, 2015

I was having breakfast on Wednesday, when I got a call a friend. It was her birthday on 22 May and she wanted to buy some clothes for herself. I kind of coerced her to go to Dilli Haat, INA, by promising to accompany her to Rajouri Garden the day after.

For such outings, I usually wear jeans. I decided to drape a half and half saree. I had this printed skirt from FABINDIA. I seldom get to wear it. I own a lot of Odishi dupattas. I wear those to school all the times, by mixing and matching. Those are, in a way, my trademark. Most of the dupattas are gifts from my mom.

I combined one such dupatta for the pallu. Gold bordered green blouse is a random purchase and I wear it quite a lot. My skirt is blue with printed flowers, that dupatta has green and black borders, and like I mentioned above, my blouse is green. My mom helped me put up the ensemble. I accessorized it with turquoise ear-drops and bracelet, which I had bought from Jaipur, in the outlet in Amber (Amer) fort.

UPDATE: My fish tale braid is made by my MOM!!

Saturday Snapshot: May 09, 2015 Saree Dates....Continued

#100sareepact

This past week, we had four working days. I draped sarees only on two of these. However, I had made up my number by wearing a saree on Monday to visit a temple. My dad passed away 13 years ago on this day...

First I will post a photo of MOM, who always wears a saree:
