Crime Fiction Pick of the Month---June 2014

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2014
The Crime Fiction Pick of the Month meme is hosted at Mysteries in Paradise. Bloggers link to a summary post for the month, and identify a crime fiction best read of the month. I know I am doing this late but better late than never!

I read 14 novels in June. Out of which, four are Crime Fiction.

I read Literary Fiction, Historical Romances, Poetry etc.

The following six are Crime Fiction novels

The Edge of Normal by Carla Norton (Crime Fiction)
The Dead Don't Dance by John Enright (Crime Fiction)
Jaspar's War by Cym Lowell (Crime Fiction)
Ill-Gotten Gains by Ilsa Evans (Suspense)

I pick The Dead Don't Dance by John Enright as the Crime Fiction Pick for June 2014

In the world of To'aga, tradition co-exists with tribal followings. The world of the past present comes together. And there seem to be more ghosts than people. Enright, with his lyrical writing, has made the Samoan landscape and wildlife alive for us. Some of the characters are very interesting as is Apelu.

It might seem slow but after a while I couldn't get enough of it. I got into the spirit of the place. This is one the best novels I have read so far. I am going to check out more of John Enright's Jungle Beat mysteries

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month May 2014

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2014
The Crime Fiction Pick of the Month meme is hosted at Mysteries in Paradise. Bloggers link to a summary post for the month, and identify a crime fiction best read of the month. I know I am doing this late but better late than never!

I read 20 novels in May. Out of which, six are Crime Fiction.

I read Literary Fiction, Historical Romances, Poetry etc.

The following six are Crime Fiction novels

The Qualities of Wood by Mary Vensel White
Out Of Exile by Luke Preston
To Sleep...Perchance to Die by Donald R. Grippo
Sufficient Ransom by Sylvia Sarno
Unseen by John Michael Hileman
The Truth Will Out by Jane Isaac

I pick The Truth Will Out by Jane Isaac as the Crime Fiction Pick for May 2014

Set between the Midlands and the Scottish Highlands, The Truth Will Out is a wonderful psychological crime thriller. The combination of plot and characters are very good. A very engrossing police procedural, where blood, gore and violence is not so apparent. However, the drug thing cannot be ignored.

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month April 2014

The Crime Fiction Pick of the Month meme is hosted at Mysteries in Paradise. Bloggers link to a summary post for the month, and identify a crime fiction best read of the month.

Crime Fiction Pick of the Month 2014
I read 18 novels in April. Out of which, only three are Crime Fiction. Usually I read all kinds of Crime Fiction, so 3 out of 18 is a surprise even for me.

I read Literary Fiction, Historical Romances, Poetry etc.

The following three are Crime Fiction. I have reviewed only two.

1. Murder Strikes a Pose by Tracy Weber
2. Chilled to the Bone by Quentin Bates
3. Dead Set by Will Carver

I am picking out Chilled to the Bone by Quentin Bates as the Pick of the Month.

Synopsis (Goodreads)

When a shipowner is found dead, tied to a bed in one of Reykjavik's smartest hotels, sergeant Gunnhildur Gisladottir of the city police force sees no evidence of foul play but still suspects things are not as cut and dried as they seem. And as she investigates the shipowner's untimely - and embarrassing - demise, she stumbles across a discreet bondage society whose members are being systematically exploited and blackmailed.

But how does all this connect to a local gangster recently returned to Iceland after many years abroad, and the unfortunate loss of a government laptop containing sensitive data about various members of the ruling party? What begins as a straightforward case for Gunnhildur soon explodes into a dangerous investigation, uncovering secrets that ruthless men are ready to go to violent extremes to keep.
