Mystery Read-a-thon (16th-17th Jan 2010): Introduction post

Mystery Read-a-thon

1) Give us five fun-facts about you.
(Things that are so trivial you wouldn't think of them right away, but that might make others smile.)

Five fun facts, let me think:

a) When at home, my socks mostly mis-match
b) I like to munch on sweet things. Salty stuff is not for me!
c) I have a secret name for my PC!
d) My paper work is all disorganized, yet I know where everything is kept!
e) I continually break my reading glasses needing to replace them almost every month.

2) What is on your TBR stack for the next two days?

Mystery/Suspense novels as yet unplanned. However, I am reading Life Support by Tess Gerritsen..121/369

3) Do you have any specific hopes and plans for this read-a-thon?

Yes, I plan to finish at least three mystery novels.

4) Did you participate in the Mystery Read-A-Thon in the past?

Yes, I did both and enjoyed those very much. Won a book too from Wendy of Caribousmom in the second one!

5) If you already participated, can you give the new participants any tips on what to do and what not to do?

Go for lighter mysteries. And if you don't like a particular book, move on to the next!

6) If this is your first Mystery Read-A-Thon, how do you plan to go ahead?

N/A

Mystery Read-a-thon (16th-17th Jan 2010)

Mystery-Read-a-Thon will take place this weekend, that is, on the 16th and 17th of January. The idea is to find 12 hours over those two days and dedicate them to reading mysteries.

I plan to read at least three mysteris during this period. My January reading has been a bit slack. Maybe this will help me get into the reading groove.

And what's stopping you? Do join in the fun!

Mystery Read-A-Thon Wrap up meme

1). Give us some stats: How many hours did you read? How many pages? How many books?

I read for 11 hours where I finished 2 books and was on my third one. I read 876 pages. I am kind of satisfied with myself.

Books read by me:

Kill for me by Karen Rose (416)
Best Intentions by Emily Listfield (338)
Prince Rupert's Teardrops by Lisa Glass (122/218)

2). What did you enjoy MOST about the event?

I had been slacking on my reading. This kind of helped me pick up my pace. And mysteries are great to keep the mind overactive! Another thing, it made me look for different kind of books in this genre. Most important, I won a book too from the giveaway hosted by Wendy of caribousmom. (This meme too is courtsey of her!)

3). Do you have suggestions to make this event better?

I would like more participation, more interaction between the participants and I think we all should try to get more people involved in it by blogging about it way ahead of time.

4). Would you participate in another Mystery Read-A-Thon?

Yes, definitely. And I like the genre too. There are too many choices and recommendations that I would like tp pick up!

5). Did you read a book for this event that you particularly liked and would recommend to other readers?

Kill For Me by Karen Rose is a good pick. It keeps us hooked till the end. I do recommend it!

The Second Mystery Read-A-Thon: Third Update

I finished my second book, Best Intentions by Emily Listfield, 348 pages, for The Second Mystery Read-A-thon.

As I said before, I found it slow. And I don't see it as mystery novel at all. Relationship yes, mystery, no way.

A murder is committed and the identity of the murderer is a foregone conclusion. It definitely doesn't qualify as a engrossing whodunnit. I will write more on my review post.

Coming back, I have finished two books:

Kill for Me by Karen Rose. Pages 416

Best Intentions by Emily Listfield. Pages 338

I have already started the third one:

Prince Rupert's Teardrops by Lisa Glass. I have read 70/217 pages. I am not sure if I am going to finish it today but I don't think that matters.

The Second Mystery Read-A-Thon: Second Update

I am having a slow reading. I am into 140 odd pages of Best Intentions by Emily Listfield. I find that it is kind of a slow read. And I definitely wouldn't call it a nail biting mystey. Infact at 140 odd pages, I am trying to decipher where is the mystery!

Wrong choice, I think. However, I will finish it.

Second Mystery Read-A-Thon: First update

I finished the first book for the Mystery Read-A-thon.

Kill for me by Karen Rose

Pages 416

I was totally engrossed in it.

I will start Best Intentions by Emily Listfield after some time.

Wendy of Caribousmom is giving away four books for this. Two are international! (That means I qualify!)

The Second Mystery Read-A-Thon is on

THE SECOND MYSTERY READ-A-THON:

August 8 and 9: It is two days, Saturday and Sunday. The goal is to once again read mysteries and thrillers for 12 hours. It is your decision whether you're going to fill part of those 12 hours with audio books or whether you're sticking to the paper kind altogether.

I am in and have selected two books as of now. I may read more.

1) Kill for me by Karen Rose
2) Best Intentions by EmilyListfield

Mystery Read-a-thon: Wrap up post!

As my server was down, I couldn't do any posts about read-a-thon. Also due to unavoidable reasons, I couldn't read as much as I wanted to.

Tell us more about your mystery/thriller reading habit.

I read vast and varied genres. Mystery/Thriller is part of it

When did you start reading this genre?

I think when I was 7-8 years old.

What was your first experience with the genre? The ever popular Nancy Drew or Agatha Christe? Or someone completely different?

I started with Enid Blyton mystery series..The Five Findouters and the dog.

How did you discover it?

My dad bought me cuople of those books.

Do you exclusively read mysteries and thrillers or do you mix it with other genres? If you switch genres, which other genres do you read?

As I said, I read varied genres. It depends on my mood what genre I pick up.

Did you finish a book?

Yes, I did finish one and a half book. I had wished to finish 4!

If so, what did you finish?

In The Shadow of the Glacier by Vicki Delaney and half of The Curse of the Pogo Stick by Colin Cotterill

How many pages did you read?

352 pages in all. Not good at all

How did the reading go for you?

Pretty slow!

Did you have any major disruptions?

Yes, we had unexpected visitors turning up.

Would you join in for another read-a-thon later this year?

Yes, I would!

What else do you think about the read-a-thon?

Although it was slow for me, I liked it! Mystery reading feels good!

Mystery Read-a-thon: Kick starting it with a meme!

I discovered the first Mystery Read-A-Thon from caribousmom's blog. And instantly decided to join in. You can choose 12 hours to read, which suits you in your time zone. I like that! So here I am kick starting it with an introductory meme:

What books do you want to read during this read-a-thon?

I am currently reading In The Shadow of the Glacier by Vicki Delaney. I am on page 61/302. I will continue with it. I will read at least two Agatha Christies and also throw in a Sherlock Holmes.

How many books do you hope to finish?

At least 4

What (if any) breaks do you intend to take?

I will take tea breaks and blogging breaks too. Also gotta cook as my brother and his family are coming for lunch.

Do you generally read lots of mysteries and thrillers or are the one of the many genres you like?

I don't exclusively read mysteries. I read a vast and varied genres and mystery/thrillers are a part of it!

What are some of your favorite authors?

I would say Agatha Christies to start with. And Sherlock Holmes is not far behind. However, I can pick up any good mystery without being picky.

If you could make us all read one mystery or thriller for this read-a-thon, which one would it be and why?

I think everyone should read Arthur Conan Doyle, if you haven't already.

Do you prefer series or stand alones?

If a mystery isn't affected by a series, I don't mind it at all. Most mysteries are stand alones. You can read those without having read the previous ones.
