Kill Word Verification---get rid of those little letters----A repost

This button was created by Bethany of B&b ex libris. In her own words "I have created a button, that hopefully becomes a movement. A movement for what? Well I am going to call it "Kill Word Verification: rid the world of useless typing."

I am all for it. I am joining this movement from now onwards. Frankly tell me, how many spam comments do you really get? I don't have word verification, neither do I have comment moderation. And truthfully I do not get spams. If I do, those are very rare and in between. I delete those instantly. So what is the big deal? So come shake it, folks! We need hassle-free blogging, i.e, commenting forum. Don't we?

I hate it even more when blogs have word verification along with comment moderation. I think that is being paranoid. However, many bloggers do not know that they have word verification as it can't be seen by blog authors.

If you have it and don't know it, then you should do the following steps:

Go to dashboard---->Click settings---->Click comments----->Scroll down to Show word verification for comments?----->Click No---->Click Save Settings and you are done!

Help spread the word about this movement:

Write a blog post about this and make use of the button. Down with useless typing!!

Feel free to voice your thoughts here. Be nice about it though!

Thanks for highlighting this issue. I'm not even sure if I have it on my blog but I am going to check and remove it. I agree that I won't get many spams and I want to make it easy for people to read and comment on my blog.

Ack, thanks for this. I didn't even realize there was word verification on my blog. It never asked me for word verification, so I figured it was off... I hate word verification too though, so thanks!

I agree! How much spam do people really get?

I admit to having had a few spam attackes where I have had 100s of spam comments in a single day, but these attacks are few and far between. You can see them starting and turn on word verification for a day or so until it subsides.

I don't need to do this though - I use askimet, which catches all spam for me. No need for verification/approval at any time. I hate having to type in letters - especially ones which you can't even read!

I agree that having to type word verification "words" is annoying. I don't have it or comment moderation and I haven't had any spam or problem commenters at all. As someone else said, you can always turn it on if you need to.

I have a question : don't Blogger has an automatic spam block? I know there's one on Wordpress, and it takes care of those I receive almost daily, but even if it wasn't there, I could easily take care of those manually.

Word verification annoys me to, especially when I comment a lot. And especially when I have to type words like "colon"(and I'm not even kidding!) Doesn't sounds really serious, does it!

I can't stand that extra step. Especially if I mis-spell it and have to retype it. Ugh. I use two spam blockers on my blog and they work perfect. But, I'm self-hosted.

I use Wordpress and I don't believe I use word verification as I hate having to do it on others blogs. I do moderate my comments due to the fact that I get tons of spam and it is nasty stuff and I refuse to let it slip through only for me to have to go back and weed it out after the fact. But I do think having to many "blocks" to get through just to post a comment is silly.

I remember joining it last year!

I must be weird because word verification doesn't really bother me that much. It takes two seconds to type the word and I'm done.

I will, however, do a trial run without word verification on my own blog and see how it goes. I've actually used it from the beginning because I had issues with my personal blog that hardly anyone read getting spam comments and it was a pain to deal with it. Especially if they happened to be inappropriate and I couldn't get to them immediately to delete them. It beats having to moderate, in which case I wouldn't get to some comments all day.

But I'm willing to see how it goes and maybe the spamming won't be so bad this time around :-)

Oh I do get a LOT of spam, somewhere around 50 per day? But Wordpress had askimet which is usually good at cathing spam.

I turned my word verification off last year for a while, but it was costing me a couple of hours a week to spend time deleting all the spam that I was getting so I turned it back on again.

I don't verify either...hate it!

I've pretty much grown used to captcha. I only really mind it when the captcha isn't on the same page as the comment or the characters are illegible. I think there are uses for captcha identification, but the ones on blog comments are, from what I can see, exceptionally badly done and user unfriendly when compared to others.

I don't mind the word verification. It takes 2 seconds and then you're done. I actually had a big problem with spammers a couple of months back, which is why I added it. I was getting comments soliciting for pornography stars and all kinds of stuff. For me, word verification gives me peace of mind that my readers are not subjected to this kind of thing on every post before I have the chance to delete it. I have a disability so sometimes I can't get to the computer and fix it quickly. This is another reason. I hope that it is not that big a deal to most of my readers, since I feel I have good reasons for having it.

word verification is a pain and I know some people reinstituted when Ed was making the rounds and spamming everyone like 40 times per day.

Good point! I didn't realize I had word verification for comments on my blog -- I've turned it off now. I like comment moderation, tho. It helps me to keep on top of things because I find that people really do hop all over my blog and leave comments on older posts. Thanks for bringing up the word verification thing - that really is overkill most of the time.

Wow, really? People don't get spam? Man, I was going out of my MIND with spam attacks back before I got my word verification working. Waking up every morning to 150 ads for dentists and viagra? Not my idea of a great time. And then people getting upset that I'd accidentally deleted their legit comment in the spam purges...awkward. That's awesome if it's not an issue for y'all, though!

I took off my word verification for the Read-a-thon, and immediately started getting spam. I'd never gotten spam before, and I've had to deal with it ever since. I plan to never take off word verification again.

I just got rid of my word verification. I didn't even remember that I had it. I do have comment moderation b/c I have gotten strange spam in the past, but I try to get the comments moderated quickly.

I'll think about getting rid of the moderation though...

I can comment calmly now and say THANK YOU! Now that I just got through a swearing fit after following your steps and finding out that word verification was turned on for comments on Rose City Reader. How irritating!

It is temporarily annoying, yes, and I didn't want to do it either. But when I did get two spam attacks it took hours to get their crud off my most frequently visited posts, so I gave in.

thanks for letting me know =)

I agree. There is nothing worse than word verification. I will help spread the word.

This is a GOOD movement! I do get a bit of spam on my blog -- but my blog is powered by WordPress, which has a program called "Akismet" that captures it and segregates it into a section where I can just delete the whole shebang at once. Nobody who reads my blog ever sees it.

When I go through and do the "Tuesday Teaser" or other such things, I sometimes just give up with all the bloody verification I have to do, on Blogger-based blogs especially. I eventually get tired, and don't even bother trying to comment on blogs that have all those stages.

(And there are more on some than on others. I might not mind word verification in some cases, if I didn't have to rush over and log into WordPress so I can use my WordPress identity, since the verification process on a particular blog doesn't have the option for doing "Name" and "URL." Bleah.)

Blogger should have a spam-catching program of its own, like WordPress has Akismet. If it doesn't -- move to WordPress! :-P

I agree that those little CAPTCHAs should die a quick and painful death. But I do see the flip side of the coin, based on the blogger's software of choice.

For instance, I use WordPress and the amount of spam I get is rather annoying. There are tools like Akismet which help separate the wheat from the chaff, but still, it's not foolproof and some legit comments get snagged and going through them is a pain in the butt. Adding a CAPTCHA would help to stop the automated spam attempts (which occur daily in my case), but I don't because it's just plain annoying. (First time commenters are moderated though.)

Frankly, I just wish spammers would go spam themselves and leave the rest of us alone.

I found a way to deal with the ones I come across for the time being... stop over and see.

It makes it more tolerable for me anyway.

I have kept it because I routinely get spammed comments (at least once or twice a week, sometimes more), and I like to nip it in the bud ahead of time by having the word verification as well as comment moderation.

So, that's my reasoning.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but those're my reasons.

Sassy Brit @ Alternative-Read.com said...

I've been spammed quite badly in the past, but I am trying it out now, without word verification, but with comment mod.

So, I will test the water and see how it works!

I don't like word verification much myself, but I can see the need to protect from spammers, since there are some nasty virus' (is there a plural for that? LOL) out there. I know of some blogs that have been totally destroyed by such a thing. Chances are probably slim, but it's always in the back of my mind.
