This is the first Inspector Devlin book by Borderlands by Brian McGilloway. Inspector Benedict Devlin works in the south but very near the border with the north in Ireland. We get learn about the troubles between north and south and the politics which accompany it.
Devlin has family issues yet tries to piece together a murder of a young girl, Angela Cashell, with no clues except for an old photograph and a very old ring. Her father is very well known by the police and he is the prime suspect. Then another youngster is murdered, with another clue of a photograph – whoever is in the photograph must know something. The photograph is twenty five years old and when Devlin and his colleagues find out who is that person then a lot of skeletons fall from their own police station, Garda station in recent months.
McGilloway has created suspense and mystery, and uses the weather too metaphorically to set the scene for many confrontations, and place the deaths and the investigation in a dark place, while the snow and the whiteness of it is in contrast. Battling the weather at every turn, Devlin is warned off by someone and their revenge but when it starts to affect his young family he needs to solve these murders and the mystery of the photograph rather very fast.
As for as good police procedurals go, it is one of those. I say go for it.
