I think you're right. As bad and crazy as fiction can seem, it usually ends better than even the tamer reality...
I think writing and reading is really all about trying to make a path through the chaos.

As a writer of fiction myself, sometimes it's been years after I wrote a book that realised exactly what it was about (for me).
And DawnTreader has already said it: writing and reading are to do with finding order in the wild uproar of life.

It always blurred - that's what makes fiction so compelling.
Yes, in fiction we are able to distance ourselves from these issues...and the outcomes are often more positive.
Maybe this is how we are able to gradually come to terms with the issues.
