What do you think of books that receive a lot of hype? Do you read them? Why, or why not?

In the beginning, I keep away from much hyped books. The publicity puts me off. However, I have read some hyped books after the hype has died down. The Da Vinci Code had a good beginning but the ending was a let down. I hated The Alchemist. And I have liked the first four Harry Potter books. I have not read the twilight series and don't plan to either. It depends. If I like the subject matter, I might end up picking up a much hyped book. Crime fiction is case in point. I have liked the Stieg Larsson books.

I got Semper Cool too! I enjoyed Beat the Reaper, but it is quite graphic.

I find hyped books' publicity off putting too, but I can be tempted to read them sometimes, but never the Twilight series.

Is it Coelho's The Alchemist? Then, it's unfortunate you did not like it. I only read it years after its hype and I liked it.

I'm not also bothering myself to read the Twilight series. I watched the first movie and I regretted it.

I'm currently into Stieg Larsson and tremendously enjoying it.

I agree that a lot of hype will rarely get me to read a book, especially if it is a genre I don't like. So no Twilight, but loved Stieg Larsson.

I'm back, posting on your "musing," and I agree with most of what you said.

I think that the rebel in me is put off by everyone saying "you must read this!"

Here's my musing:

I don't do hype. For example, I read Girl With the Dragon Tattoo long before the whole series got so hyped and became THE thing to read.

Have you read Tana French's first book in that series, In the Woods? I really enjoyed that one, and have just bought her new one, Faithful Place. She's such a good writer!

happy reading

I usually try to ignore the hype as much as possible, and look at the books on an individual basis. That's not always easy to do, of course. And I agree about The DaVinci Code - it really needed a better ending.
