Sunday Salon: Diwali, the Hindu festival is here!

The Sunday Salon.com

It is a long summer this year.
Diwali, the festival of lights is one week away (17th October) and the HEAT is on. Evenings are as hot as ever. And I have been slacking in my reading. It is not as much as heat as Diwali. It is one of most important festivals of Hindus. In certain communities, the next financial begins from Diwali. We clean and decorate our homes, buy gifts for family and friends and go around meeting people, attend fairs and everything that is a part and parcel of any festival. I will write more about it next weekend.

Along with school and other personal work, where do I get the time to read? However, I am reading Tintin Albums whenever I can manage and also read a Historical romance so as not to tax my mind too much. Today too I spent most of my day out, shopping, hunting for gifts. It really gets hectic to choose the perfect gift for for each and everyone of my family and friends.

In the midst of all this, how do I read? I had started The Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran, sometime back and yet to finish it. Reviews are pending for quite a few books, which includes Beloved by Toni Morisson, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dosteovesky. Somehow I seem not to have any time. My poetry writing too is suffering. And that is a bad thing.

I also need to get together those books I plan to read for the Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon. I think I will keep a mixed bunch for those. Graphic Novels, and thinner books being the top ones. Mysteries work well and so do romances, for fast reading. I am open to suggestions. Anyone?

What about you? How are you spending your sunday?

What are your favorite things to give as Diwali presents? This is my first Diwali as a married person and I am trying to come up with something creative to give to people.

I can't wait to hear more about Diwali. It sounds lovely. I have taught lessons on it, for reception children and have always wanted to learn more.

I look forward to hearing more about Diwali next week! We are going to be away for the read-a-thon, so it looks like I'll have to wait until spring to join in :-(

I also want to hear more about Diwali. A few years ago we had some parents from India give the younger students a presentation on this holiday. They drew a beautiful chalk drawing in front of the school and, if I'm remembering correctly, it was scattered with flower petals.

I'm sorry about your reading and writing but am sure it will all come back in focus soon. Have a great week.

I look forward to your post about Diwali, Gautami. It sounds like a busy but fun time. It's no wonder you are so busy with all that is going on. The read-a-thon will be a nice chance for you to spend a lot of time reading.

Have a great week!
