Weekly Geeks : Second Chance

Have you ever changed your mind about a book or author the second time around? Have you ever given a book or author a second chance?

One book that immediately comes into mind is The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. I had liked the The Handmaid's Tale very much but The Blind Assassin just couldn't hold my interest. I started it but I abandoned it after 100 pages and when I picked it up again after six months, I didn't put it down until I finished it. I consider it one of my best reads till date and don't know why I couldn't get to it first time around.

Fairly recently is Kill For me by Karen Rose. The premise somehow put me off reading the book. I was even thinking of giving it away when I picked it up again for The Second Mystery Challenge. Once I started I just couldn't put it down. With complex characters and nail biting pace, this too completely took me in. So much so that I am going to read more novels by Karen Rose.

I have abandoned The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff after reading 1/3 of the book. Not because I didn't like it but because at that time I had some personal issues and couldn't concentrate on the book. I will pick it up again and finish it at one go.

There are many more but for now, these three are enough, don't you think?

How about you? Do you give books/authors second chance?

Some Atwood books I love and some I want to throw across the room. My post is about Neil Gaiman.

A couple years ago I had read A Virtuous Woman by Kaye Gibbons with my book club. Unfortunately, the group overall did not care for it. But just a few months ago we read Charms for the Easy Life also by Kaye Gibbons and we all loved it!

I love the Blind Assassin. I've read it twice and loved it both times. I'm glad you gave it a second chance.

So much of *my* reaction to a book has to do with where I'm at in my life, so I definitely am apt to give books another go when I'm in a different frame of mind. I find Atwood rather difficult so that would definitely fit into that category for me that I would have to be in the right mindset!

Well, I have given authors/books a second chance. Sometimes I am happy I did, while other times it was painful to finish it!!

Possession is one for me. I couldn't get into it at all the first time, and now I'm over half done, although I have put the book down for a long pause. If I remember any more - and I know there are! - I'll come back and let you know. Interesting weekly geeks!

I have just pulled two books out that I do want to give a second chance: The Thirteenth Tale and The Shadow of the Wind. So many people have loved those two books and the descriptions of both sound like I should love them. When I first picked them up, I couldn't get into them. I'd like to give them a second chance.

I have read two of those authors ...

Attwood - not the Blind Assassin though -as almost everyone I know who has read it - says it takes for ever to get into it....

Karen Rose - I know the feeling - I have read three of her boosk now and the first one took almost four months before I completed it - and by the second book - I could stop reading... it was so good.

I loved The Handmaid's Tale but I've yet to read The Blind Assassin yet. I guess the thickness of the book intimidates me a little, LOL.
