The Sunday Post/Sunday Salon: Two weeks of Backlog

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It's a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

I did not do a Sunday Post last week. I suppose I was lazy or maybe too busy. I have been on a shopping spree for the last two weeks and yet not finished. I have bought all my dresses/Saris for my niece's wedding. Now the blouses need to be stitched and accessories to be coordinated. That is ONE big headache. I am NOT the dressy kind and now I am finding myself floundering!! I am also enjoying...!!

I better get to business of books. I have been reading on and off. I am not able to finish one at one go, for obvious reasons. But I do read something or the other to relax  my mind. Also I must confess Social Media too eats away my time! (Bad!! Bad!!). However, I did participate in the Thrill Week II and finished a Crime Fiction....

Here is what I posted since August 26/2012. Do check out my posts:

The 12th Victim by Katia Lief

Title: The 12th Victim
Author: Katia Lief
ISBN: 9780091944780
Publisher: Ebury Press/2012
Pages: 368
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back Cover:
The police call him the working girl killer. But no woman is safe…
The 11th victim is found only a short distance from Karin Shaeffer’s house. At the crime-scene she discovers a local prostitute stabbed to death, the knife left embedded in her body.
It is the signature of the ‘Working Girl Killer’ – a serial killer who has terrorised New York City for the last three years. The police are clueless but when Karin’s best-friend becomes the lead investigator, she finds herself drawn into the investigation as a consulting detective.
But as she struggles to understand the dark twisted mind of a murderer, next time the killer is going to strike all too close to home…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My views:

The 12th Victim is the second novel featuring Karin Schaeffer. She seems to have recovered from the dark phase of her life with her second husband, Mac and son Ben.

A local prostitute is killed with a knife, Karin finds the body and then the body count keeps adding up. When her son's part time nanny too is found murdered, it is too close home
for her. She is not new to murders or serial killers.

When her best friend becomes a suspect, Karin cannot keep still. She has to find the killer at any cost. And unravels something sinister which involves children. She makes it her goal to protect Dathi, her son's nanny's child.

Just when one thinks that the killer has been identified, there is a twist. With a good, racy pace, the novel takes us into a roller coaster ride and keeps us totally engrossed. We also like the single minded way of Karin to achieve her goal to nab the killer.

Katia Lief gives us great moments too despite the grisly murders and grim situations. She also tries to tell us about cultural differences and the common thread running between those. I am going to read more of her novels....

Booking Through School Books

btt button

We all had to read things in school that we didn’t like … but what about something you read for a class that you ended up liking (or loving)? An author you discovered that you might not have found? A genre you hadn’t thought about?

In school, I read The Passage to India by E M Forster, which I liked very much. Then I read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and also Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, which I liked. I also got to read two plays, The Barretts of Wimpole Street by Robert Beiser, and All My Sons by Arthur Miller and loved those too.

Teaser Tuesday: Violet Fire by Brenda Joyce

"How wonderful," Martha said. "How many children will you have?"

"Just two," Grace said, with a deep sigh.

Violet Fire by Brenda Joyce

It is 1870s. Grace is a  women’s rights activist. Her mother is unwell and she needs money for her treatment. No one is ready to hire her in New York because of her radical views. So she travels to Mississippi as she gets a job as a governess there.

She had met Rathe Bragg two years back in a part where she had created chaos by spouting slogans atop a piano! Now She meets him again two years later, in the plantation where she has been hired as a governess.

Rathe remembers her and feels a strong attraction for her. He soon comes to know she needs the money for her mother and offers for her to become his mistress. She refuses. But she is thrown out of her job and somehow cannot hold any other job either, because of her strong views. Rathe proposes to her but she refuses to marry him. However, she agrees to be his mistress so that she can still be independent in her own right.

She continues to teach young black children even though some people, including the sheriff, are against it. Then one day, She leaves Rathe, and the new church is burned down and there is a burnt body with her wearing her necklace. Rathe assumes that the dead body is Grace and is heart broken. He travels home to Texas to visit his parents and then he see’s Grace, who is as much of firebrand as she was before. And you can imagine the rest..!!

I love Brenda Joyce novels. However, I won't say it is one of her best works. But the pace is good and I liked the radical views of the heroine. She thinks NOT for herself but for the people, the ones who are ignored at large by the society....

Varied Novels!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Have you ever considered writing a book before? What genre would you write?
Yes, I have considered writing a novel. I have 1/3 of the manuscript written down. I would call it magical realism in contemporary set up. And I am not sure if I am going to finish it ever.
Also as I am a poet, I have considered compiling my poetry in the form of a book and publish. Let us see......
Arctic Fire by Paul Byers
Title: Arctic Fire
Author: Paul Byers
ISBN: 9780615504070
Publisher: Fortress/2011
Pages: 377
When there is a water shortage, Nigel Cain decides to get it from Arctic in the shape of Massive icebergs. He builds a 5-star hotel and casino in an iceberg and invites the media and important people to witness the event. He hires Gabriel Pike, an Engineer to make it viable.
Pike feels privileged but after sometime, he finds sinister going on's in the form of a double homicide. Now Pike's main work is to save his own skin along with others.
The novel was a bit slow in the beginning but picked up pace after some time. Cain's madness can only be controlled by Pike. And he does it with aplomb. Then there is this question of man trying to play God by controlling nature. The novel makes us think.
With a cover like that, Arctic Fire beckons one to pick it up. The premise is not for everyone. However, once one picks it up, he/she will not leave it halfway through.
