Booking through Age-Appropriate

Do you read books “meant” for other age groups? Adult books when you were a child; Young-Adult books now that you’re grown; Picture books just for kicks … You know … books not “meant” for you. Or do you pretty much stick to what’s written for people your age?

I can read almost anything, but I do tend to avoid Fantasy, which is mainly aimed for young adults. Paranormal stuff I can't read, which too is somewhat aimed for YA.

Having said that, I have enjoyed the Harry Potter novels. Our perception does change with age. I devoured Agatha Christie as a teenager. I still do but there is a subtle shift. Previously it was more for the detective part, now I also analyse the various characters. That can be said about any book. But let me be spared from Fantasy and Paranormal stuff!

    I try to steer clear of Fantasy too, but i do enjoy paranormal, :)

    I'm not wild about fantasy but I do like paranormal/sci-fi-ish books. I also like what you said about the way you read changing through the years. It's so true.

    I agree with you, I do not like Fantasy and Paranormal. I read mostly adult books of today.

    While I might explore some YA books out of curiosity, the ones I choose won't be paranormal or vampire stuff. I plan to read Harry Potter at some point, though, since my grandkids (even the bookish ones) loved this series.

    I don't care for supernatural or paranormal books either. There are exceptions though, if one considers Twilight or Harry Potter to be in those categories. I enjoyed these immensely but I tend to read mysteries, legal thrillers, women's fiction, and a great deal more too.

    I read a lot of books aimed at young readers, but I do tend to stay away from "Young Adult" books. I didn't even like YA books when I was a YA myself!

    If I read new books aimed at young adults it's usually of fantasy or fairy tale kind. Some I like (Harry Potter) and others I don't.

    I've stepped out of my comfort zone and have read some really good fantasy/paranormals. But normally do not choose them. As a teenager, I read more adult fiction and now I read a lot of YA.

    I can understand being somewhat unimpressed by most of the fantasy hyped by publishers and bookshops (there can only be so much paranormal romance that one person can take), but I wouldn't dismiss it as a genre completely. I mean, one of my favourite books, The Amulet of Samarkand, is a fantasy, but the focus is more on politics and power plays between people than it is on the actual magic stuff. I'd really recommend it if you like fiction about people.

    Amen about the fantasy and paranormal stuff! It doesn't interest me in the least. There's too much else worth reading, that most fantasy and paranormal books seem a waste of time to me.
