Top Ten Bookish Pet Peeves


Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week, we get a theme to list our top tens. 

This week is all about Top Ten Bookish Pet Peeves! 

Now how do I list those? Let me start:

1) I don't like long paragraphs. Some go on and on. Prime example being War and Peace. Although I did like the book after that bad start.

2) Un-necessary  use of similes and metaphors. It takes away from the story
3) Too many characters introduced and they don't make sense after a while.

4) Book blurbs not doing justice to the content.

5) Obnoxious covers which do nothing for the novel

6) Wrong grammar. I can't stand it.

7) Use of Slang language. I want to throw the book!

8) Neat endings where everything is tied up! Too neat gets my goat!

9) When the plot gets blurred. In some novels, one loses the plot and it doesn't make sense any more, what the author is trying to say.

10) Movie covers! That is a guarantee that I won't pick that particular book!

    Great list! I so agree with #2 - I don't like overly descriptive language at all.

    When there are too many characters, my brain always seems to just remember the important ones, and then sometimes goes, 'oh right, he's her friend' on the lesser ones- it's definitely been doing that with Anna Karenina!     I definitely do NOT like movie tie-in covers. Never buy them.

    I think sometimes authors forget to rein in their plots and things just get out of control.

    I am surprised too by bad spelling and incorrect grammar. Though sometimes the author is trying to say something with the grammar itself. If you're a genius you can get away with that. Otherwise - no.

    You have a great list too! Not only hate it when there are too many characters, but when some of them just up and disappear for most of the book. (Just had that happen in my most recent read.)

    Interesting blog Gautami! I agree with many items on your list, especially nod. 2 and 5. Anything that gets in the way of the story - especially show offy language is a beef for me. And covers that look nothing like the story characters seem just plain sloppy.

    The only time I've actually seen books with movie covers is when doing google searches for book covers to use in review. Happily I've never seen one in an actual library!
