Series? Or Stand-alone books?
Something like this was asked in BTT in September 2010. I will answer it in a similar vein. I prefer stand alone novels any day . I have read the Harry Potter series and also read all the three novels of the Millennium trilogy. These are exceptions than the rule.
One has to read series in the proper order. And that totally puts me off. It has to be VERY good series to pique my interest. And I also don't like to wait for the next book. For stand- alone novels, you can just pick it up, with no worries.
I agree with your comments. If you find a series you like, its sometimes hard to get your hands on the next one when you are still interested in the series. It has to be a very good one to get me interested.
ReplyDeleteFor me, as long as its a good story then I'm all for it. I don't mind waiting for the release of the books that follow in a series as long as they're worth it.

I'll read either, but it does seem like I've been avoiding series lately.
ReplyDeleteI like reading series books but I'm crazy about having to read books in the proper order.

I like both. With some series it matters more than others if one reads them in the right order. my BTT
ReplyDeleteI'll read either. My favorites are series set in the same "universe" but with different protagonists from book to book. The best of two worlds and you don't necessarily have to read them in order. More at Mostraum Viewpoint
ReplyDeleteGood point about having to wait on the next book - I do hate that about series. I've been reading mostly stand-alone novels lately, but I don't mind a series if it's well written.
ReplyDeleteI liked the Millennium trilogy too. I heard a rumour though that it was supposed to be ten books long. I wonder if it would have continued to be as good had the author been able to finish them. Have also since heard that his partner has his notes and is planning on finishing them. Will be interesting to see.
ReplyDeleteI have that feeling of waiting with stand alones too. When I have read the entire back list of a favourite author and I now have to wait for the next one. The satisfaction of holding that much anticipated book is worth it (so long as it holds up to your expectations of course).
I like both, but books in a series more. Here is my answer for this week's Booking Through Thursday.
ReplyDeleteI love a good stand-alone, but I lean more toward series.

I enjoy both. There are also series don't have to be read in a particular order. But I think there is too few stand-alone books lately.
ReplyDeleteI agree, that's why I read more stand alone books.

I enjoy both, if it keeps you reading.
ReplyDeleteVery well said, I totally agree.
ReplyDeleteGood points. One of the things I love about the internet is that it has made it so much easier to find out the proper order of a series.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that you have to read them in order (and sometimes have to wait for the next one) is definitely a weakness in series. Good point! I feel like I should reconsider my answer now hehe.
ReplyDeleteI like both, but I do have to read a series in order. It's ruined for me if I read out of order.
ReplyDeleteI love series, but eventually I get bored with the same characters and all the books start running together.
