Mondays: Mailbox/Whereabouts/Musings

I received the following book, thanks to the author:

The Elephant Tree by R D Ronald
Mark Fallon is an overworked detective investigating a spate of attacks at a string of high profile city centre nightclubs. Scott is a dejected 24 year old struggling to make ends meet working for his brother and supplementing his income with a small-scale drug dealing operation. Angela is an attractive 23 year old, raised by her father, a career criminal and small time drug dealer who supplies Scott with cannabis. This is a chilling tale spanning a few months in the lives of Scott and Angela, where realizations about the present combine with shocking revelations from the past leading to an apocalyptic climax where they no longer know whom they can trust.

What makes you love / hate a character in a book?

It depends. If I connect with it, I love it. Sometimes a negative character may also be lovable. Hating is a strong word. But I do hate manipulative characters. Both in a novel and real life!

  6. I'm in a reading slump myself. Trying to work my way through a couple of nonfiction books, but I don't think I'll be finishing them any time soon. Enjoy your new book!

  8. Yes, I can relate to that...I've been steadily plodding along, with nothing too momentous, but ticking off "read" books, one at a time.

    Here's my week:

  10. An interesting one I'm not familiar with! Sometimes I just need a break from reading. I love reviewing, but sometimes I wish I didn't have deadlines because sometimes you need to be in a certain mood for a certain book.

  11. Oh no! I hope you get through your slump soon - maybe browse through a book store and pick up something that catches your eye? That works for me =)

  12. My cure for a slump is a trip to the bookstore or library to get something I want to read rather than something someone wants me to review

  14. I hope you find a book you can just dive into and love from start to finish. I recommend Summer House by Jude Deveroux.... older title but I think you would love it. Its one of my all time favorites!

  15. I think slumps hit us all. I know that my TBR shelf, which is constantly starring at me often makes me feel overwhelmed. I am sure you will get back into the pages when you feel like it. Have a great week.

  18. Not the dreaded reading slump! I get that every so often and it usually ends when I take a trip to my local bookstore.

    Cheer up!

  20. Since I'm not a book reviewer, just a book reader with an opinion, I choose the books I want to read. So, a reading slump is something I very seldom have, unless, something else keeps me from reading.

If I had to read The Elephant Tree, I would be in a reading slump, because it is not my genre of reading. That's why I could never become a book reviewer, there are just so many books I would never read and it wouldn't be fair to whoever was providing the books for me. I hope the slump moves on and you get your enjoyment of reading back soon.

  24. I understand the reading slump. Sometimes a funny book or something light helps to get me going again. Right now I am reading Still Missing and it has me captivated!

  25. Maybe its not me then. I have been in a slump for the past 2-3 weeks whereas I think I finished 1 book. And its making me nervous as the review pile stares at me.

  26. I find that when I read too many books at one time there is a period when I don't finish anything followed by a period where I finish everything, so it looks like I read a lot of books in one week. It all good. Have a good week.

  27. Reading slumps are terrible. I hate them. But there is always an amazing book right around the corner waiting to break you out of it.

  28. This one sounds exciting, enjoy! And I thunk reading slumps are normal, though slightly terrifying for bookworms ;)

  29. I love your attitude! We all go through ups and downs in our reading, and it's so important to just pick up whatever book your heart desires.

  31. I am all too familiar with reading slumps. Enjoy it, Embrace it, and be happy when it comes to an end! You'll savor books even more.
    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  32. I agree. Manipulative characters can be very frustrating (especially in real life)!

  33. I hope your finding other fun things to do, since you're in a reading slump. The Elephant Tree sounds interesting.

  34. The Elephant Tree sounds very mysterious. I hope you like it.

  35. Sometimes you just have to find something Fun to read! Hope you get over your slump soon!

  36. Sorry about your slump, maybe you just have to get rid of the pressure and don't push the reading. Watch a comedy on tv, try cooking something new, do something you wouldn't normally do and just forget about the books. As I told someone else today, your books are like good friends, they will be there when you need them or ready for them.

  38. I'm so sorry about the reading slump! Ugh. It's so hard sometimes. The only way to overcome it sometimes is to just step back for a bit, at least for me that's what often helps.

Good luck with the next week! Just pick something when the mood strikes you, you never know!

Have a fabulous reading week and thanks for stopping by earlier!

  39. Think of it as a reading rest from which you'll return with renewed enthusiasm. :-)

  41. I think everyone goes through a slump. Give yourself a break and you will come back to it.

  42. Slumps are the worst! I feel like I go through a mini-slump every time I start a new book. I feel like I'm making this huge commitment to start a new book. So crazy.

Just relax and enjoy your time book free for a bit, you'll be out of the slump in no time.

  43. Yes, slumps are the worst. I'm having an enforced blogging slump at the moment because of I'm doing 2 jobs at the moment. That's one job in each office and the offices are 1500km (yes one thousand five hundred!!) apart.

  44. I think I've heard of this book, but I don't remember exactly. I've been in and out of reading slumps lately. Hope you are able to get back to reading soon!

  45. I've had to limit myself to only reading a couple of books at once because I was getting involved with too many as well! Good luck with the ones you're reading :)

  53. I've gone through those slumps, too .. most recently when I returned back to full-time work and couldn't remember how to properly structure my days after so many languid days without the need to get up TOO early and get to bed just as early! :) The Elephant Tree, however, looks very interesting; I hope you enjoy it!
