Sunday Salon: Where I talk about Google Reader....

Today I decided to do something that I have been dilly dallying for long. To streamline my Google Reader. I had 590+ feeds subscribed there. Those include poetry blogs, news, book blogs and some more. Google Reader is a good way to keep in touch with blog posts.

But I think I overdid it. Almost 600 blogs is too much. It was unmanageable. So after BBAW, I decided to cull it. I have unsubscribed from 200 blogs. Not an easy task. I found out many blogs had not posted for months, even years. Those were first to go. Then the ones, I don't read any more. YA ones. Some poetry blogs too. Now it looks better but I know I have to cull more! I have decided to do that over next few days. It takes so long!

Over the past few days I have been thinking the same thing. I have no where near as many as you, but some days it seems overwhelming to look through hundreds of posts and I hate the feeling of just "marking all read"

I have to do the same... What ended up happening is I added the people that have commented on my blog lately to it... So, that means more! Some I might not stick with and I probably have blogs that don't post anymore or even people that have switched to different blogs...

I haven't even looked at my Google reader in awhile! I don't read blog posts there, so I wish I could just get rid of it.

It doesn't seem easy to manage.

I wonder what happens if I just ignore it? Does it explode at some point? LOL

Thanks for the topic.

Good for you! A feed reader is a good way to keep up with everything but with to many blogs to watch you don't read anything at all. I should do the same, I think. By the way, it's quite the same with FB groups :-)

I created a group within a group in Google Reader. This group consists of those I'd like to visit once a month, at least. And I try to do so. The others, not so much.

590 feeds? I thought I was over-doing it! I have started trimming back because I find I end up getting distracted by some of the feed I am linked to and then I don't have time to visit the blogs I really want to read. I'd love to know what some of your favorite poetry blogs are.

Good for you! I often have to go through to check and make sure that blogs are active or at least of interest still. What a lot of work tapering it down. Good job!

600 blogs! Wow, that's a lot!
I try to read my Google Reader everyday or else it'd get too overwhelming, but still don't you wish you've more than 24 hours a day.

I need to go through mine. I haven't done that at all.

Have a great week!

I don't blame you for weeding some out. 600 blogs is way too many to keep up with!

Good for you! I do this about every 6 months ... then the numbers creep up again.

I have hundreds of blogs in my feed reader that I haven't sorted/culled in a long time too. It's one of the many things on the to-do list.

I always feel as though I have achieved something when I delete a few blogs from the feed reader. I try not to look too closely at the fact that I mainly delete people who aren't that active anyway. Yes, I am quite often a bit self delusional!

I think we all need to do this from time to time, but you're right, it can be an exhausting process!

I've been dealing with a similar situation, and you're right, it takes a lot of time! And visiting all these blogs really cuts on my commenting time, so I'm trying to do better now.
