Booking through Film to Paper

btt button

Do movies made out of books make you want to read the original?

Actually yes. I have watched a great many Hindi movies and then read the books, on which the movies were based. Most of those are Epic movies based on history, and I want to know exactly what had happened in that period. It is sometimes true for English movies too. Costume/Period Dramas are better seen and can be read afterwards.

If Ulysses was made into a movie, most of us would watch it and won't feel guilty for not being able to read the book.

Yet, I would say I have been disappointed in a few movies which had I watched before I read the book. Maybe a book appeals more to us.

Me, too - I've seen quite a few historical films that sent me looking for books on that period. It's a great way of learning about history - fun and painless!

I always preferred reading all of Jane Austen's books before I watched the movie versions. So much of the story is lost in the movies, I think, anyway.

The book is always better than the movie. But hey at least they try :)

I would much rather read and come up with my own imagery from the descriptions through the writer's words.

I agree that the visuals of a film can enrich a historical novel for me.

I had one professor who always took his classes to the 18th century exhibits in the local art museum for the same reason.

Book definitely do appeal more. Movies leave out little details. Plus, you might picture a scene differently than it is portrayed in the movie.

Movies have cause me to read plenty of books in the past.

It depends. I usually try to read the book first so I can create my own pictures in my head. But for some books written several centuries ago like Dickens or Austen, I think that viewing the film actually enhances the reading experience for me.
I will rarely read a book after seeing the film with current material. For example, I wasn't finished with the 2nd book in the Millennium series, The Girl Who Played With Fire, when we went to the movie. I didn't go back and finish the book even though I was well into it prior to viewing.

Good point you made here. However, I still usually read the book, whether before or after seeing the movie.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my blog!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I usually prefer to read first. Your right for historical movies it is good to go read a book afterward.

I think Ulysses may have been made into a movie back in the '60s. Although it would be difficult to imagine it was a good movie. Ulysses is too much of a language experiment to translate well into film.

I feel like watching certain period dramas enhances the movies, as well! Historical events, too. You go back and are more knowledgeable about how you perceive the book after you watch the movie.

Thank you for stopping by my blog, by the way! <3

I usually prefer reading the book than watching the movie. However, there are times when I have watched a movie or series that have made me want to read the book such as a The Pillars of the Earth. Check out my BTT post at http://pageflippinaddict.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/booking-through-thursday-film-to-paper/

I love Hindi movies, any recommendations?

Ummm... No, because the book to movie thing ALWAYS pisses me off. Like, a lot. I am very much a purist. I know it's irrational, but when I watch a movie and I've already read the book, I expect to see the book. I just get really angry when movies take too many liberties with a book I've read, so I don't watch the movies at all any more.
And, a lot of the books that are being made into movies are really popular, and I've already read the book and/or have it on my TBR waiting, so it's pretty rare that seeing a movie or movie trailer makes me want to go read the book.

I forgot about historical films. They have sometimes inspired me to read the history books they are supposedly based on or rather, these days, look up Wikipedia entries about the people in the films or TV-series. I ended up not watching Tudors anymore because I couldn't understand the changes that the series makers made - and usually to make the series *less* dramatic than the real history! The same is generally true of history films I've seen.
