Booking through heatwave

btt button

Now that summer is here (in the northern hemisphere, anyway), what is the most “Summery” book you can think of? The one that captures the essence of summer for you?

With Delhi's temperature hovering around 109 deg F to 111 deg F, I can't think of books which conjure summer. It is too hot to do that when mind can't fathom this impossible heat. I am not into much of beach reading either. I feel those are very light reads and I can't read anything so light.

There isn't any specific book I can mention as summery read. It depends on my mood and the time of the month.

That leaves me with books which can be read any time. I will mention genres here not specific books or authors. Crime fiction, Mystery, Thrillers, Magical realism, Fantasy cover most for me. I like good strong women's fiction too, which have strong female protagonist. Then I can read poetry in summers. The late evenings are perfect for those.

Presently I am reading Bel Canto by Ann Patchett and find that I like it. Next on my agenda is Company of Liars by Kate Maitland. There seem like perfect summer reads. At least for me. Bill Brysom works too along with a few other non-fiction.

What works for you? Heavy reading? Light reading? Poery? Comics? Or something else?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW, I am only a few short of 1 00 000 hits! Help me reach that mark.
I have never read anything "summery" myself. I like a mix of reading light & heavy books.
That was my reaction to this question too.
Well, since I don't have air conditioning, and I have kids 24/7 that will get up in the middle of the night to interupt me reading a book, I'd say something light that can be put down and picked back up without losing track of what's going on or the continuity.
I agree its very hard to think of something that is particularily 'summery' as every summer is different and full of different things that would evoke it in memory.
I can read something light in Summer like KoolAidMom, something that doesn't need too much concentration.
Yes, sometimes it can get just too hot. It's a great feeling when you pass the 100,000 hits.
Follow up comment - my husband came up with the perfect summer book - "Forever Summer"
I don't really separate summer reading from regular reading so this question is hard for me! I don't think I'm going to be answering this week. If I had to choose I'd probably pick lighter books for vacations or things like that, but in practice I think I normally pick longer books because I tend to have more time. Not this year, though.
I enjoyed Bel Canto and wouldn't have read it if my son hadn't left it around the house. A lucky find!
With temperatures like those, perhaps your summer reading should head in the direction of A Winter's Tale?
I don't usually change my reading habits in the summer, but I may listen to more books, because I like to do audiobooks when working in the garden.
my god you must be hot. And there was me complaining about our minimal heat, I would not cope in the temperatures you have.
Happy BTT!!!
Poetry seems like a great choice! And I completely agree with you about the regular "beach reads." They usually don't have enough of a story to be worthwhile for me.
We are in the triple digits also now in the Sonoran desert. In this weather I tend to like quick mysteries and thrillers that can grip your mind and make you forget about the heat!
I'm confused. I guess we are having two different questions this week. I read very little in the summer. It's hard to consentrate when there is so much going on outside. Happy BTT!
Wow, I can't even fathom temperatures that high...but it sounds like you're enjoying what you're reading and that's what counts...stay cool!!
I'm still trying to think of a "summery" book.
Echoing the commenters who can't get their heads around "summery" reads, or a heat wave like you've got going in Delhi. Yikes!
At least tell me it's dry heat... triple digits and humidity would be hellish.
Sending you gray skies and cooler temps from my corner of the world!
Yes, I had trouble with this one, too. I finally managed to come up with a few books that remind me of summer whenever I read them. But I can certainly see why you wouldn't want to think about summer in that heat!
No, I can't distinguish books by season, either. But I do enjoy Bill Bryson! You are about the fifth person to mention Bel Canto. Guess I'll have to read it sooner rather than later. Wishing you a good fan and some ice cubes...
I just read what my mood desires. For me, any book that can fit in my beach bag is a beach read. Hope you reach 100,000 soon. Congrats!
I found myself perusing this chick lit type of summer romance novel. Ha! Never says never! It's called Sceneic Route.
For me summer is usually the time when I read a lot of mysteries.
I read anything that looks interesting whether it's light, heavy or a who dun it!
I am reading Run by Ann Hachett right now, and love anything by Bill Bryson. Happy reading this summer!
I like summery books - I like a mix of heavy and light reading. It depends on my mood, though.
I like books that don't require as much concentration in the summer. I usually don't read classics during the summer - I have to think too hard, and I can't pay attention to the kids in the pool or playing at the park. :)
I also like to read for mood and not so much for season. But the books I read as a child bring back the carefree summer feelings.
I read according to mood not according to weather or season.. but Harry Potter's last book was released when I was on my summer vacation so that is the only book I would associate with summer :)
